Informative Genre
For my informative genre, I decided to write and research about same sex marriage in RI. It has been a constant struggle for our state to have this bill passed and I feel as though being educated on the topic is important, especially to those who are anti-same sex marriage for religious purposes. I am all in favor of people believing in their own opinions however, being hypocritical only hurts their argument and makes it difficult for others to take them seriously. I am strictly going to provide statistics according to RI and marriage. Showing how many divorces happen in RI, will show that religion doesn't keep them together and should not be used against same sex partners from getting married. I feel a need to write about this because I have many friends who are gay or lesbian, and are dating amazing people. If they decide in the future, they want to spend the rest of their lives together, then I hopefully will be able to witness the beautiful ceremony that they all deserve.

I have always felt that people do not have the right to alter the way others live their lives. I think if two people are in love and committed to each other they should be able to get married, no matter the sex. I think that we are all equal and should be given the same rights as individuals. Being citizens in America we have the right to freedom, and can live our lives however we please. I think it is important that states throughout the nation recognize same sex marriage as a right.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that same sex marriage should be legal. Love isn't discriminating and you can't change the way you naturally want to feel. It's unfair that others expect you to suppress your true self just to fit into society. The religious aspect is so ridiculous. No religious person follows all the rules to a T. Dr. Micer from Purdue North Central in Indiana showed his ENGL 101.002 class a letter written to Dr. Laura in response to a homosexual comment she made. Even though it's sarcastic, it's still something you may want to read. http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/drlaura.asp
ReplyDeleteNot being able to be married also creates problems with legal issues. A homosexual couple that isn't recognized by the law creates problems with things like social security and pension to a partner if one dies. They're forced to file separate taxes when they can't say they're a legal couple, and insurance offered through work won't be able to cover the significant other because they aren't a spouse or dependent. Our government is supposed to be separate from the church, but if that was truly the case then what is holding us back from legalizing same-sex marriage?
Homosexuals are still human beings.
I think this is a good topic being it is very controversial. Being from the midwest area, many have a different outlook on this topic. Many individuals have a more conservative viewpoint on things so the same sex marriage issue is not on thier good side. I think that as long as someone is happy, let them be with who ever they want to be with just so long as they do not try to force their ideas on to others. I believe in respecting others viewpoints and beliefs. If someone tries to force thier ideas on me then I will have an issue with them. I would try to research into the emotional issues at hand and the legal issues.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that same sex marriage should be legal along with other things. I think if its something you want to do you should do it. It is the same thing with abortion. I think it should be the peopl's choice whether or not they should do it. Who are we to put restrictions on what other people should do? We should just mind our own business.
ReplyDeleteits a good topic and should be a great paper. the government is a little crazy on such a simple problem. if two people of the same sex wants to get married then let them. They are not bothering you so why should you stop them.
ReplyDeleteThis topic is one that is a very touchy subject. I am glad that you slighty gave your opinion, but you stated that you are going to keep your argument stickly factual based. That is a good approach.
ReplyDeleteI think the key to happiness is finding that one person that will make you smile even when you're having the crappiest day ever. Whether it be a boy or a girl, I think pursuing happiness is the key element to being a successful life.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with what others have said, the topic is very emotional and controversial. Although, I do agree with what is being said here. If two people are with each other, then why are we as a government to say if they can or cannot be together? I think in the paper it would be interesting to see research on the restrictions placed on same sex marriage if it was ever passed.
ReplyDeleteEven the issue of marriage, in general, is controversal today. In today's world, the reasons for getting married are ridiculous compared to yesterday. Maybe if we legalize same-sex marriage we'll be uniting two people who actually love and care for each other instead of get married out of convenience. Religion will always be an issue, but I believe it also depends on how a person was raised; whether they were taught same-sex relationships were perfectly fine or sinfully wrong. Something you might look at is how does home-life affect ones opinion on the issue?
